Solomon Learns From Suffering, November 17

“耶和华我的上帝啊，如今你使仆人接续我父亲大卫作王，但我是幼童，不知道应当怎样出入。──所以求你赐我智慧，可以判断你的民，能辨别是非“（王上3:7-9）。{RC335.1}

O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.... Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad. 1 Kings 3:7-9. {RC 335.1}

大卫早年所受的训练，是所罗门所缺乏的。所罗门在环境、品格和生活方面，似乎都胜过其他所有的人。他在青年和壮年时人格高尚，蒙上帝所心爱，在登基时有着繁荣尊贵的美好前景。各国的人都惊讶这位蒙上帝赐予智慧之人的聪明和见识。但繁荣下的骄傲使他与上帝隔绝。所罗门竟转离了那因与上帝交通而来的喜乐，去从情欲的放纵中寻求满足。关于这种经验，他说：：{RC335.2}

The discipline of David’s early experience was lacking in that of Solomon. In circumstances, in character, and in life, he seemed favored above all others. Noble in youth, noble in manhood, the beloved of his God, Solomon entered on a reign that gave high promise of prosperity and honor. Nations marveled at the knowledge and insight of the man to whom God had given wisdom. But the pride of prosperity brought separation from God. From the joy of divine communion Solomon turned to find satisfaction in the pleasures of sense. Of this experience he says: {RC 335.2}

“我为自己动大工程，建造房屋，栽种葡萄园，修造园圃；……我买了仆婢；……我又为自己积蓄金银和君王的财宝，并各省的财宝；又得唱歌的男女，和世人所喜爱的物。……这样，我就日见昌盛，胜过以前在耶路撒冷的众人。……凡我眼所求的，我没有留下不给他的；我心所乐的，我没有禁止不享受的；因我的心为我一切所劳碌的快乐。……”{RC335.3}

“I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards: I made me gardens and orchards ...: I got me servants and maidens ...: I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasures of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts. So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem.... And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour.” ... {RC 335.3}

“后来我察看我手所经营的一切事和我劳碌所成的功，谁知道是虚空，都是捕风，在日光之下毫无益处。我转念观看智慧、狂妄和愚昧。在王以后而来的人，还能作什么呢？也不过行早先所行的就是了”（传2:4-12）。{RC335.4}

“Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun. And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done” (Ecclesiastes 2:4-12). {RC 335.4}

“我所以恨恶生命，……我恨恶一切的劳碌，就是我在日光之下的劳碌”（传2:17-18）。{RC335.5}

“I hated life.... Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun” (verses 17, 18). {RC 335.5}

所罗门从他自己痛苦的经验中认识到一种在属世的事物中寻求幸福的人生是多么虚空。他曾为外邦的神明筑坛，结果只是看出它们所能赐予心灵的安慰是多么的渺茫。{RC335.6}

By his own bitter experience, Solomon learned the emptiness of a life that seeks in earthly things its highest good.... {RC 335.6}

所罗门在晚年疲乏而干渴地转离了世上“破裂不能存水的池子”，而再度转向那“活水的泉源”（耶2:13）。在圣灵的感动之下，所罗门将自己所浪费的年日和其中警戒性的教训记录下来，作为后代的鉴戒。这样，他所撒的恶种虽然结出了苦毒的后果，以致危害了他所治理的百姓，但他一生的工作总不算是完全枉费的。苦难的锻炼终于在他身上起了作用。{RC335.7}

In his later years, turning wearied and thirsting from earth’s broken cisterns, Solomon returned to drink at the fountain of life. The history of his wasted years, with their lessons of warning, he by the Spirit of inspiration recorded for after generations. And thus, although the seed of his sowing was repeated by his people in harvests of evil, the lifework of Solomon was not wholly lost. For him at last the discipline of suffering accomplished its work. {RC 335.7}

所罗门既有如此美好的开始，他若能在年轻时学到别人从苦难中所得的教训，他的一生将是多么光荣啊！（Ed152-154）{RC335.8}

But with such a dawning, how glorious might have been his life’s day, had Solomon in his youth learned the lesson that suffering had taught in other lives!—Education, 152-154. {RC 335.8}
