A legal religion is insufficient to bring the soul into harmony with God. The hard, rigid orthodoxy of the Pharisees, destitute of contrition, tenderness, or love, was only a stumbling block to sinners. They were like the salt that had lost its savor; for their influence had no power to preserve the world from corruption. The only true faith is that which “worketh by love” (Galatians 5:6) to purify the soul. It is as leaven that transforms the character. . . .{HB 184.2}[2]

先知何西阿曾经指出法利赛式宗教的实质:“以色列是虚浮的葡萄树,为自己结出果实”(何10:1,英钦定本)。犹太人自称侍奉上帝,实际上却在为自己作工。他们的义,无非是按照他们自己的看法,为谋求自己的私利,凭着自己的努力来遵守律法的结果而已。因此这种义决不会比他们本身更好。他们努力使自己圣洁,实际上就是设法使洁净之物出自从污秽之中。上帝的律法是与祂自己一样圣洁的,也是与祂自己一样完全的。它向人显示上帝的义。人靠自己决不可能遵守这律法,因为人的本性是腐败变态的,与上帝的品德完全不同。出于自私之心的行为都像“不洁净之物。”“我们……所有的义都像污秽的衣服”(赛64:6)。{HB184.3}[3]

The prophet Hosea had pointed out what constitutes the very essence of Pharisaism, in the words, “Israel is an empty vine, he bringeth forth fruit unto himself.” (Hosea 10:1.) In their professed service to God, the Jews were really working for self. Their righteousness was the fruit of their own efforts to keep the law according to their own ideas and for their own selfish benefit. Hence it could be no better than they were. In their endeavor to make themselves holy, they were trying to bring a clean thing out of an unclean. The law of God is as holy as He is holy, as perfect as He is perfect. It presents to us the righteousness of God. It is impossible for us, of ourselves, to keep this law; for our nature is depraved, deformed, and wholly unlike the character of God. The works of the selfish heart are “as an unclean thing;” and “all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.” (Isaiah 64:6.){HB 184.3}[3]

律法是圣洁的。犹太人靠着自己的努力遵守律法不可能得到义。基督的门徒如果要进入天国,就必须获得一种义,其性质与法利赛人的义是完全不同的。上帝藉着祂的儿子,向他们提供了律法完全的义。如果他们愿意完全敞开心门接受基督,上帝的生命,祂的爱,就会住在他们心中,把他们变成祂的形像。他们就是这样藉着上帝白白的恩赐,得到了律法所要求的义了。但是法利赛人拒绝了基督。他们“因为不知道上帝的义,想要立自己的义,就不服上帝的义了”(罗10:3)。{HB184.4}[4]

While the law is holy, the Jews could not attain righteousness by their own efforts to keep the law. The disciples of Christ must obtain righteousness of a different character from that of the Pharisees, if they would enter the kingdom of heaven. God offered them, in His Son, the perfect righteousness of the law. If they would open their hearts fully to receive Christ, then the very life of God, His love, would dwell in them, transforming them into His own likeness; and thus through God’s free gift they would possess the righteousness which the law requires. But the Pharisees rejected Christ; “being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness” (Romans 10:3), they would not submit themselves unto the righteousness of God.{HB 184.4}[4]
